"Road Map in the Air" - the new TOI is out.
 ==============================

The Other Israel, April 2003, issue 107/108, is out

As the title suggests, much of this issue is devoted to the "Road Map", and to the debate in the Israeli peace
movement on how much - or little - can be expected of this long-expected diplomatic document, and to the
related issue of Abu-Mazen's Prime Minister. "A road map to nowhere" is the title of Uri Avnery's article, a
conclusion disputed in Jeff Halper's "the Road Map - potential & weaknesses".

--The issue deals witth the conquest of Iraq - giving descriptions of the demonstrations in Tel-Avi
v and Haifa
- the modest Israeli contribution to the worldwide anti-war movement - and analyses how the war im
pacts our
situation. --There is a discussion of what was widely feared to happen under the smokescereen of th
e war
(large scale ehttnic cleansing - which the advance warnings may have helped prevent) and what did h
appen (wide
extension of the so-called "separation wall" effecively annexing large parts of the West Bank and
disposses
hundreds of thousands of Palestinians). The beginnings of organised protests by Israelis and Palest
inans
against what we call the Apartheid Wall are covered in this issue.

The refusers of military service also have a big share of this issue, with an analysis of how the h
igh
command came to regard a group of youngsters as a threat big enough to occupy the time and energy o
f
two generals and to resort against them to mass court-martials unprecedented in Israel's history.

In addition, there are covered many peace activities: innovative demonstrations, such as the Rave a
gianst the
Occupation near Sharon's farm in the Negev and the carnavalesque Drummers' march in the streets of
Tel-Aviv;
various protests with Palestinians & food convoys to beleaguered villages in the occupied territori
es; the
ongoing monitoring and reporting.

Finally, some attention is paid to the interrelations between the ongoing conflict and the deterior
ation of
the Israeli economy, and the economic austerity plan of Finance Minster Netanyahu which provoked th
e present
general strike by the Israeli unions. (One of the side effects of the disruption of postal ervices
is that TOI
issues might be delayed on their way).

The Other Israel is now in its 20th year. Right now, back issues are being made accessible in a
computerized web archive (issues since 1994 already available):
http://www.israelipalestinianpeace.org/issues/opening.htm

This is a collection of on the one hand detailed analysis of the political developments - which, wh
en put
together are a quite complete historiography of two decades of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict; an
d on the
other hand action reports giving a vivid picture of a broad variety of peace groups.

If you didn't see TOI before, you can send us your postal address and we will send you a free sampl
e.

If you did see it, and forgot to subscribe you can send subscription fees now; when you announce it
 -
including your address, we will post your copy already.
