Gush statement, Ha'aretz August 6

		'A BOTTOMLESS BARREL'

First, the Chief-of-Staff, Moshe Ya'alon, said that the IDF will "fight 
against terrorism" until they "sear the Palestinian consciousness."

Recently, one of the chiefs of the Security Service said that the army's 
"fight against terrorism" is like "emptying the sea with a spoon."

This week, the Chief of Army Intelligence said that it is impossible to 
succeed by military means alone, since "Palestinian terrorism" is like "a 
bottomless barrel."

The army chiefs want to withdraw from Beit-Hanoun, the area they occupy 
at the northern tip of the 
Gaza Strip. They do not want to get into the 
nearby Jabalya refugee camp. They want to get out 
of there. For that, an agreement with the 
Palestinian leadership is needed - and that is 
exactly what Sharon does not want.
