The killings at Har Adar should serve as a wake-up call to a government which intends to hold tomorrow a “celebration” to mark fifty years of Israeli occupation and settlement in “Judea and Samaria”. The ministers who spent a great deal of public money for this “celebration” assert that we have “come home” to a territory where Jews lived 2000 years – completely ignoring the fact that in the present this territory is home to millions of Palestinians. Fifty years of Israeli military occupation have not made the Palestinians give up their dream of being a free people in their homeland. Nor will another fifty years of occupation, or another hundred. Those who seek to perpetuate the occupation and intensify settlement activities would ensure many more years and generations of hatred and bloodshed, to Israelis and Palestinians alike. Especially on this day, we must reiterate: Bloodshed can only end through peace between Israelis and Palestinians, between the sovereign state of Israel and the sovereign state of Palestine. Without ending the occupation there is no chance for peace. |
