The growing fight against the deportation of asylum seekers is an encouraging show of civil engagement and strength. But at the end of the day, what will determine whether or not Israel follows through with the deportation is now in the hands of the Rwandan government. If Rwanda refuses to accept people who are brought by force, the deportation will crumble. Publicly, the Rwandan government denies agreeing to accept people deported by force. But the Israeli government insists that the Rwandan government agreed to these terms, and therefore continues to prepare for the deportation. Rwanda's statements about its opposition to absorb those forcibly deported, and its denial of agreements with Israel, come in response to a demonstration held in front of the Rwandan Embassy in Herzliya two weeks ago. The small number of asylum seekers who took to the streets successfully managed to put pressure on the Rwandan government. Imagine the impact we could have if we come out in the thousands! This week, demonstrations are being held in front of Rwanda's embassies around the world. I call on you to join them. If you want to fight the deportation - join us! The address is Ha`Maskit 9, Herzliya. This is one protest, of many, happening simultaneously around the world. All of the protests will be calling for one clear action: “Rwanda, do not cooperate with the forced deportation of refugees”. Rwanda has clearly stated time and again that they will not accept those who are deported against their will, and yet the Israeli policy is presenting refugees with two options, relocation to a third country or indefinite imprisonment. Let us demand from Rwanda to maintain their commitment to international law. Choosing between imprisonment and deportation is not “voluntary departure”! Let’s show the refugees, who are under a great deal of pressure, that they are not alone, we are with them. Vote with your feet, get out of the house and show that we will not stand idly by and let the deportation take place silently. Don’t close your eyes! Our past as strangers, as refugees, requires us to act today for the sake of those today - because we also were there and therefore "we know the soul of the stranger" Kabbalat Shabbat will be led by Rabbi Esteban Gottfried along with musicians from Beit Tefilah Israeli and members from the asylum seekers' community.
